Research: Piperine

THE POWER OF PIPERINE

PIPERINE IS POWERFUL BUT MUCH OF THE COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE BLACK PEPPER FRUIT HAS LESS THAN 7% PIPERINE

Piperine is the major bio‐active component of black pepper fruit. It has anti-inflammatory properties that increase curcumin and AKBA absorption and bioavailability. It also regulates metabolism, stimulates circulation and improves dopamine and serotonin levels*. In it’s natural state, black pepper fruit contains 2% piperine.

Watch out for:  Bioavailability and absorption

Piperine increases the time that curucmin and AKBA remain in the body prior to elimination. However, most piperine is lost in the liver and stomach lining. This reduces absorption and bioavailability to render piperine less effective. Extra measures need to be taken to help the piperine through the stomach and into the small intestine where it can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Piperine improves absorption by changing the way the body processes these ingredients and allows the body to accrue more of the benefits. Piperine also stimulates circulation because it increases the size of the blood vessels to increase blood flow. Look for products that proactively increase the bioavailability and absorption of piperine. Enhanced capsule technology is one technique. These capsules stay in tact, bypassing the liver and stomach, to reach the small intestine.

Watch out for: The percentage of available piperine

Much of the commercially available black pepper fruit has 2-7% piperine. For piperine to act efficiently it should be available at adequate levels. Products standardized to contain 95% piperine is known to be the most effective. For maximum effectiveness, choose a product with a high percentage of piperine.

Watch out for:  Optimum quantity

Make sure the brand that you choose has 15-20mg of black pepper fruit standardized to contain 95% piperine. Some brands contain non-standardized ingredients which have negligible quantities of piperine.

Watch out for:  Contraindications with medication

Piperine has the ability to increase or decrease the bioavailability and absorption of other substances*. Always consult a qualified health professional before beginning any new dietary supplement.

Watch out for: Products that have not been tested in a USA lab

Be sure that the brand you use is tested in in the USA to assure purity and safety of the product.
