Deep breathing. Anytime. Any place.
YES. We can we manage pain with deep breathing.
Most of us don’t breath deeply enough to feel the extra benefits that breathing has to offer. Research shows that deep breathing can help people with arthritis manage pain and associated anxiety. It does this by calming our limbic system and relaxing our mind and body. From this place, we can observe our emotional reaction to pain. How we perceive the pain, impacts the pain itself. Let’s take a breath-break to notice if our emotional reaction to pain is positive, negative or neutral. Let’s use the BREATH BREAK and FOCUS ON FABULOUS exercises to calm our limbic system, change our mental channel and support ourselves with daily self-care. Small steps make big change.
Take a breath-break
Let’s try this now. Yes. Now. Seriously it will take 10 seconds. Do it with us now. Without changing our breathing, pause and observe our natural breathing style. Is it shallow, deep, slow, fast? Now, with our lips closed, inhale slowly all the way to the top of our breath. Hold it for a second and exhale slowly and softly all the way to the bottom of our breath. If we’re doing this right, we’ll hear the gentle sound of our breath.
How will you create a breath-break habit?
